Learn the Signs of Hearing Loss to Ensure Better Treatment

Hearing is one of the most essential sensory experiences of human life. A good hearing ability ensures you enjoy your surroundings, communicate effectively, and learn quickly. Hearing is also necessary to ensure your safety while on the road or in any mode of travel. Hence, you must ensure that your hearing ability is in great shape.

However, if you suspect hearing loss, you must visit a hearing centre (centre auditif) to get an audiometry test. Adults, children, and babies have different signs of hearing loss. Knowing about these signs can help you identify and treat hearing loss effectively.

For Adults-

  • Misunderstanding what other people are saying, especially in groups
  • Increasing the volume of your television or music
  • Constantly asking people to repeat what they say
  • Inability to understand the direction of incoming noise
  • Struggling to hear the doorbell or telephone ring
  • Experiencing listening fatigue

For Children-

  • Lack of clarity while speaking or slow to talk
  • Asking to repeat what someone has said
  • Talks loudly
  • Doesn’t respond when called
  • Increasing the volume of music or television

For Babies-

  • Doesn’t respond to the sound source when below 4 months
  • Doesn’t react to loud noises
  • Notices someone only when they see them, not when they call them
  • Unable to say a single word until 1 year old
  • Can hear only a few sounds, but not all

If you are observing these signs in yourself, your children, or a baby, make sure to get a pure-tone audiometry (audiométrie tonale) test right away. Such a test will help you find the extent of hearing loss, the reason behind it, and the best way to tackle it.

To get an audiometry test, you can either visit an ENT specialist or take a preliminary test at home via an online audiometry test. Such a test will help you understand whether the hearing loss is:

  • Conductive hearing loss: Loss due to earwax or fluid buildup.
  • Sensor neural hearing loss: Caused due to damage to hair cells inside the inner ear or auditory nerve damage.
